The AXIOME AIRBAG weakening machines. 

There are several vehicle interior parts that can contain an airbag (dashboard, pillars, glove box, steering wheel cover…). These parts must be weakened so that the airbag remains invisible, while deploying correctly.

AXIOME has developed specific robotic machines for this application.

The process selected and validated is milling with standard components identical to those used for the cutting of instrument panels, for example.

To achieve the necessary repeatability, the milling tool is linked to a highly dynamic linear axis, and the part is moved by the robot.

The weakening operation is carried out with real-time control and closed loop of the part’s position. This ensures a very repeatable residual thickness in the weakening area.

All parameters are monitored, recorded and associated with the part number to ensure complete traceability of the process.

These machines are used in mass production and can be adapted to several vehicles by simply changing the tooling.
